The World Affairs Council of Charlotte
will host the tenth annual Academic WorldQuest on Monday,
November 17, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church (200 W.
Trade Street.) Teams from 20 Charlotte-area high schools
will participate in this international trivia competition
and answer questions in history, current events, geography,
international faces in the news, and other categories. The
event is sponsored by The Map Shop and CPI Security Systems,
Inc.

will host Senator Chuck Hagel, 2-term Republican senator
from Nebraska and author of “America:
The Next Chapter: Tough Questions, Straight Answers” at
a luncheon on Thursday, October 30th, 12:30 p.m.
at the Charlotte City Club. The lunch presentation will
provide a thoughtful analysis of American foreign policy
(and domestic policy), the future of America and its role in
the world within the framework of Senator Hagel’s book.

Management will host Tim Weiner, Pulitzer Prize winning
journalist, National Book Award Winner (2007) and author of
Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA at the WACC
Speaker Series Luncheon, September 30, 2008, 12 p.m. at the
Westin. The lunch
presentation will discuss his book, Legacy of Ashes:
History of the CIA. Weiner describes the failures of
intelligence gathering and mismanagement of the Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA) which has catapulted the U.S. into

The World Affairs Council of Charlotte announces its annual
Council Scholar Awards designed to reward outstanding
teachers (K-12) in Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas
who have demonstrated commitment and interest in
international education. Funded by The Wachovia Foundation,
CPI Security Systems, and the Federal Republic of Germany;
the Council Scholar Program celebrates 15-years of
supporting international education in the Charlotte area.

Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy” to speak at
WACC Speaker Series Luncheon on May 8, 2008

speak at the World Affairs Council of Charlotte Speaker
Series Luncheon on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 12 PM at the
Charlotte City Club.
In his just-published book, “Rising Powers, Shrinking
Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy” Klare asserts
that international power is not dependent on a country’s
military might, but rather on its available energy
resources.
Today, the
key global commodity is oil and oil underlines and affects
most, if not all major geostrategic and geopolitical
challenges facing the U.S.A. What are the consequences of

German Language: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Area Students
Participate in Language Luncheon
Charlotte, N.C., May 13, 2008

The World Affairs Council of Charlotte will host its German
Language Luncheon on Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at
12:00 PM at
Waldhorn Restaurant (12101 Lancaster Hwy). Students and
teachers from 15 Charlotte-area high schools will
participate in the Language Luncheon to honor
high school students with outstanding German language
conversation skills. Special guest Hon. Kurt Waldthausen,
Honorary Consul of Germany, will speak at the luncheon. The
German Language Luncheon is also co-sponsored by the Federal
Republic of Germany, Charlotte Latin School and the
German-American Chamber of Commerce.
