Charlotte, N.C. – The World Affairs Council of Charlotte hosted the tenth annual Academic WorldQuest on Monday, November 17, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church (200 W. Trade Street.). Teams from 20 Charlotte-area high schools participated in this international trivia competition and answered questions on history, current events, geography, international faces in the news, and other categories. The event was sponsored by The Map Shop and CPI Security Systems, Inc. This year, Providence Day School won first place as they tested their knowledge of current world events, geography, and world history.

Members of the Providence Day School team include Vidur Kukrija, Ian Noblitt, Michael Greshko, John Osborne, Cindy Cammarn, Michael Starr, Tyler Brown, Colby Olliver and coach, Gordon Bynum. Each student won a gift certificate to Barnes & Nobles, and the school will represent the Charlotte area in the national competition on April 4, 2009.

Second and third place winners were Charlotte Country Day School (CCDS) and Providence High School. All three teams will participate in the local community WorldQuest competition in spring 2009.

A
cademic WorldQuest is a trivia competition for high school students, focusing on international affairs, geography, history and culture. The competition was invented by the World Affairs Council of Charlotte (WACC) and is now played around the country.

Who Can Play?

Any high school in Mecklenburg or the surrounding counties is welcome to compete! Teams consists of eight high school students from the same school. This event is open to the teams of high school students and their accompanying teachers or chaperones.
 
How is Academic WorldQuest Played?


There will be eight rounds in Academic WorldQuest 2008. Each round will consist of 10 questions; 30 seconds for each question. Each team will be provided with an answer sheet that must be turned in at the end of each round. Only correct answers will be considered for the final tally. In the event of a tie, a sudden-death round will be played

We will send you a brief study guide and more detailed Team Registration Forms for you to provide us with team member's names. Only 20 teams can register so if space is full, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list.

 

How Can Teams Prepare?

Questions will be categorized into different rounds such as People in the News, Flags, Geography, History, and Current Events. The Council will provide a brief preparation guide to teams once they have registered. This guide will explain the content of each round and provide suggested websites and resources to help teams prepare for the competition

What Happens If My Team Wins?

For the 1st place, your school will get a computer (generously donated by IBM) and a cash prize towards expenses for attending the National Competition in Washington, D.C. in April 2009. For the 2nd and 3rd place, each of your schools will also receive an IBM computer. In addition, students will be able to include their experience on their resume or college applications.
